The MINT Summer Academy Osnabrück is a cooperation between the Student Research Center SFZ Osnabrück,
University and Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences with grammar schools in the Osnabrück region. Its aim is to support particularly
talented and high-performing pupils.
Young people in year 8 are to be introduced to STEM topics in the two courses of their choice, which cannot be offered in this way at school.
Pupils should improve their teamwork skills by working with pupils from other schools who were previously unknown to them, and the focus should be on
discovery-based learning.
At the STEM Academy, students can pursue or discover their interests in the technical
and mathematical/scientific fields at a young age. This enables long-term
growth of their skills in this area. In addition, the academy enables participants to gain initial perspectives on possible fields of study.
In the mathematics course, 11 students worked on parquetry problems. What symmetries can parquet floors have? Are there parquets that consist of only one type of tile and yet have no displacement symmetries? Such parquetry is called aperiodic. One such tile was discovered in 2023. The students themselves experienced that tiling with this tile is extremely difficult. Nevertheless, experimenting with the tiles was a lot of fun.
